MOVING MADNESS: How to Stress Less on Moving Day

NORTHBROOK, Ill. (May 25, 2009) - There's almost nothing more daunting than the thought of packing up your life and moving. Whether relocating down the block or across the country, movers can save time and energy by setting a plan of attack for packing.
"A new home is exciting, but packing up and moving usually isn't. That's why planning and preparation is everything in setting the stage for a home move" said Fran Broude, president and COO of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage.      "There's really no way to remove all the stress of a move, but it is possible to make the experience less hectic and more organized. The goal is to get happily settled into your new home as quickly as possible."

Consider these pieces of advice as you prepare for your big day:

  • Clean house. Once you know you're going to move, decide what you don't want to bring along. Scour closets and storage spaces and organize items in three piles; sold, donated to charity or moved to the new home. Also take a sharp eye to larger pieces such as furniture, decor and appliances. These are more difficult and costly to move and shouldn't come along for the ride if they don't have a place in your new home.
  • Notify all authorities. Give the post office, utility service providers and friends and family early warnings of your change of address. The process of disconnecting and then restarting services can be time consuming, so generate a comprehensive check list early on. Your Realtor will likely have a kit or pre-arranged check list to simplify this process.
  • Set aside essentials. Create a list of items you will need within the first couple of days after your move such as bathroom supplies, cleaning items or the all important coffeemaker. These are pieces you'll need to set aside as you pack. Also, make sure to secure important documents, expensive jewelry and fragile pieces you want to personally keep track of during the move.
